It won't win awards, but it will show up in productivity numbers and injury absence records.

What does a tool balancer actually do?

A spring tension balancer suspends a tool (or cable, hose, or piece of equipment) at the operator's working height with calibrated tension. When the operator picks the tool up, it feels almost weightless, the spring absorbs the tool's weight. When they let go, the balancer retracts it smoothly to the working position.

This does two things:

  • Saves time. The tool is always at hand, no reaching, no picking up from a bench, no setting down between fastenings. On high-cycle operations, this adds up to a meaningful percentage of total cycle time.
  • Reduces injuries. Repeatedly lifting a 2 kg grinder hundreds of times per shift strains the shoulder, wrist and back. A balancer eliminates that load. Hoses and cables are also kept off the floor and out of the operator's way, reducing trip hazards and wear on the supply lines.

Key factors in choosing a tool balancer

Load capacity

The most important specification. Select a balancer rated for at least 20% over the maximum tool weight, this gives the spring the right tension range to retract cleanly without being too stiff for the operator to pull down. Tecna balancers are available from 0.2 kg to 180 kg.

Wire stroke

The length of cable available for vertical movement. You need enough stroke for the operator to reach the lowest point of their working range comfortably. Consider the full range of heights, seated to standing, top of a component to the floor. Tecna balancers offer wire stroke up to 3 metres.

Mounting position and suspension arm

Most balancers mount on a standard rail or ceiling bracket. If the workstation layout requires horizontal reach as well as vertical, a suspension arm, rigid or articulating, will bring the balancer to the right position over the operator's work area.

Environment

Standard balancers suit most factory environments. For outdoor use, wet areas, or explosive atmospheres (ATEX), specify the appropriate variant. Discuss with us if the environment is unusual.

Multiple tools on one balancer

It's possible to suspend more than one item from a balancer using a swivel hook divider, but the combined weight must not exceed the rated capacity, and the balance point shifts. Generally, if you have multiple tools, it's more practical and safer to use separate balancers on a rail.

Tool balancers are used wherever hand tools are used repetitively:

  • Assembly lines, screwdrivers, nutrunners, torque wrenches suspended at each station
  • Fabrication shops, angle grinders and die grinders on balancers at grinding stations
  • Automotive body shops, large grinders and sanders counter-balanced for panel preparation
  • Aerospace assembly, precision screwdrivers and drills suspended for consistent positioning
  • Warehousing and logistics, bar code scanners, scales and light equipment suspended at packing stations

How long do they last?

With regular maintenance and correct use, a quality tool balancer will give 10 or more years of reliable service. Springs and cables are the parts most likely to need replacement over the life of the unit, both are straightforward to change. We supply Tecna replacement springs and cables as standard.
